I am sure that there are many out there. Rediff.com tried to compile list of top 50. It ( Link given at end of this posting ) seems to be well compiled list to begin with.
All of people in this list have one thing in common. They all had passion in their respective area to achieve which others did not try or did not have commitment ( and talent ) to excel.
List does not only contain businessmen and entrepreneur, but also include
- Academicians
- Scientists
- Bloggers
- Top journalists
- Musicians
- Top corporate executives
- VCs
- Authors
- Geeks
- Government officials (Didn’t guess that, right?
) - And more….
Though theme of this blog is on technology and entrepreneurship, it caught my attention since like every entrepreneur, everyone in the list dared to aim high and had passion to pursue & achieve it. That’s what counts !
In my mother tongue ( Gujarati ) there is a proverb — “Nishan chuk maaf, pan nahi maaf nichu nishan”, ( નીશાન ચુક માફ, પણ નીચુ નીશાન નહી માફ ) , meaning it is OK to miss a high target, but it is NOT OK to begin with low target !
True entrepreneur and visionaries never aim low !! In my opinion, that’s first sign of greatness!
I am very positive that editor may have missed someone who you consider influential and great achiever. Please, feel free to comment on that.
My addition: - Vivek Paul ( Ex- CEO of Wipro ) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivek_Paul
After some years, I will like to see “Your” name in the list!

Influential and successful are two different things. I would say, for example, that Bill Gates is more successful, but Steve Jobs is more influential. You could disagree, but I’m sure you get the point
Kuntal,
I agree in theory. This list is far from perfect, but quite good reference point. Also, Influential and successful both could subjective. To someone, Bill Gates and its flagship product windows ( which owns 90% of OS market ) is more influential
