Do we need 50 Mbps DSL line in USA ?

NOTE: If you are new to my blog, you can subscribe to RSS feed.

Yes, we do ! And may be, we need it soon !

Why do we need it ?

Good question. Answer is simple - our needs are increasing. Before 10 years, we had complete office LAN working at simply 10 Mbps and it was sufficient at that time, but now time has changed. Our needs demand higher bandwidth. We have large photo uploads to Video and Movie streaming over Internet. Video over IP is new happening thing. Don’t be at all surprised after 10 years, if you don’t find any phone without Video conferencing in-built. Good quality video streaming requires at least 19 Mbps line, if one wants to watch higher resolution frame. Video is becoming most sought after media for communication, education and entertainment. Success of “YouTube” is one simple example of it.

Do we even have such technology ?

Here is good news. Technology is already available for 50 Mbps or even higher DSL line, known as VDSL ( Very fast DSL ). Even the company which makes this technology is a US based company.( http://www.Ikanos.com ). Ikanos was the first one to enter the VDSL market and it has recently gone public too. ( Ticker: IKAN ). There are few other manufacturers in USA too. Then why is it not being offered in US ? Now, that’s a very valid question. Answer is — Because carriers don’t want to do it. Why ? They want to make enough money and get required ROI before they upgrade the infrastructure. Great !! Now, we are stuck because big companies can’t make lot of money before passing latest technology to customers!! Yes, that’s the feeling many of us have.

When will it be available in US ?

Hmmm… now we are talking. That’s the right question. Based on my judgment, it will be another around 3 years or little more, super high bandwidth will be available and our world be even more connected then it is today.

Conclusion

USA needs to buckle up for speed and put all efforts to revamp the infrastructure or soon we will be left behind. Oh wait, we are already behind, we will be “far” behind in this case.

Well, after reading this article, if you feel little “bandwidth” deprived by any chance, don’t worry, you are not alone. :) All US broadband users should be feeling same. By the way, question which comes to my mind is — should we even call 6 Mbps line as “broadband’ anymore, when thee are 60 Mbps line available ?? :)

What do you think ? Feel free to express your opinion.

You may check out AT&T’s ACCU-Ring Service.

ACCU-Ring establishes connections on a dual fiber ring network between AT&T Points of Presence (POPs), your premises and local access providers, employing a dual-fiber self-healing ring with a primary path and a protected path

Following are few features and options :-

Two-way digital channel for transmission of synchronous, asynchronous and Time Division Multiplex (TDM) signals via a private dual-fiber, self-healing SONET ring that assures the highest reliability for uninterrupted communications

Consolidation of all traffic, including AT&T all-distance traffic (voice, data and video) and such AT&T services as T1,T3, OC-3, Frame Relay, ATM, WorldNet, Managed Internet Service (MIS),Video, AT&T Nodal services, Local Dial service and Ethernet services

Service Channels DSn speeds of 1.544 Mbps (DS1) and 45 Mbps (DS3), SONET speeds of 155 Mbps (OC3/OC3c), 622 Mbps (OC12c) and 2.5 Gbps (OC48c).
Ethernet Service Channels of 50 Mbps, 150 Mbps, 300 Mbps, 600 Mbps and 1 Gbps

Thanks Umang. Information sounds pretty technical
I can live with DS3, which is 45 Mbps. How about pricing ? Is it too expensive ?
VDSL are ideally of same price as normal DSL available right onw. That’s the beauty of it. Fresh cost of server and client end equipment is also same for service provider. Only issue with USA is that infrastructure already exists and service providers will have to pay for upgrade!

ACCU-Ring Service will be expensive over VDSL.
You can call 800-248-3632 (at&t Business Services) for pricing details.

You are SO right. Bandwidth has always seemed to lag behind. An article in Yahoo today forecasts gloomy days ahead if the infrastructure isn’t beefed up.

    Hi

This would b great 4 u guys, but don’t complain too much - we in South Africa were stuck with 1 Mbps as our fastest connection until recently - now we have 4 Mbps!!!
Also our charges are exorbitant - $95.00 for a 4 Mbps line with a 3 Gig cap!!
